A refreshing point of view re Twilight Saga from an NI Blogger

Source http://therealpaulac.blogspot.com/2010/07/so-is-stephanie-meyer-new-shakespere.html

So possible any guys reading or ladies over a certain age (ie 21 yrs) might be scratching their head saying WHO at this point. So let me explain S Meyer is the author behind the Twilight Saga.
Ok for those who havent stopped reading at the mention of Twilight let me explain what I mean. Twilight is the 1st of 4 books centrating on the story of vampires, werewolves but predominately this is a modern day love story.
Strip away the oddities of the two main guy characters – (one is “the living dead/cold man ” the other is a furry, snarling canine ) and what do you get? Both guys fighting over the heart of the human – Bella.
So who is still confused as to why on earth i think this book shares any similarities to Shakesperes most famous book – Romeo and Juliet? Let me explain.

This is a love story of the highest degree- the kind that you only really find in books or films. The deep burning connection between the 2 characters whats superceeds life or death. Like R &J, Edward and Bella are willing to die rather than existing without each other.
Point 2 – even though this series is written in modern day America the morals of the 2 heroes are a theme throughout the 4 books. Edward is determined not to “do the do” with Bella until they are married. Also (and please feel fress to correct me if Im wrong but) there is no swear words, cursing in the books or film. So another postive theme which could be used as an example in schools or for life. Now this could be more to do with the fact that S Meyer was brought up with a Mormon background where this behaviour was unaccectable but still is a postive message to have.
Soooo am i convincing anyone yet? Who is with me in my campaign to replace good ole Will Shakespere with Miss Meyer?
Not yet? Ok third reason then lets discuss the relationship between the 2 main groups in the story – the vampires and the werewolves. And yes we had the rivalry in West Side Story but think of the postive message of twilight. The WW and V werent just rivals based on a gang culture. Their reason for hating each other went centuries deep and fundamentally the whole reason for the WW existence was to protect against the V. Yet in book 3 (eclipse) the 2 groups have to put aside differences to work towards a common goal of protecting Bella.
Also think about it- the fact that there is no distinct “good” or “evil” in the stories. The reader is left to make up their own mind as to who they feel more empathy with and are Routing for to win Bella’s heart. Go to a group of 20 or so Twihard fans, and for every 1 who is one “Team Edward” there will be at least 1 who is “team Jacob”. What better way of demonstrating to teenagers how complicated the troubles of the world are!

I rest my case…. so if I have convinced you lets go…. Stephenie Meyer’s IS the new Will Shakespere … END OF!!!!!

Why Men feel threatened by Twilight/Edward Cullen …..

Recently I have been reading some appalling reviews of the Twilight Saga and a lot of other Vampire Tales : all putting their own spin on  the “inexplicable” draw to these characters, particularly for, dare I quote it “women of a certain age”.

Well, being a “women of a certain age”, 42 to be precise I feel it’s time to put my two pence forward, just for the record.

Most recently I had the displeasure of reading “How Twilight Works” by Oatmeal – real name Matthew Inman – surprise surprise – a 27 year old man who seems to be an expert on just about everything and all round general smart ass and condescending prick.   And get this – he runs a dating website….enough said.

Well Matthew, let me shed some light on why “chicks dig this” as you so eloquently put it.   Some men (possibly you among them) not all men I hasten to add, have no concept or understanding of what some women actually want.

In an ideal world we would all have a partner who loves us so unconditionally, passionately and completely as a character like Edward.  However – as most of us don’t due to the unfailing inadequacies of men like Mr. Inman the complex Washington State matchmaker, women like me enjoy a little bit of escapism.  Twilight provides the perfect portal.  We can relate to the characters, empathise with them, hurt for them and wish them the happy ending they (and we) all deserve.

So Mr. Inman – jealous much?  Of fictional characters? After all what man wants to see his wife/partner engrossed in the next installment of the Saga while he switches of the light and goes to sleep, uncomfortable in the knowledge that  she would rather be in the company of fiction?

So come on guys – step up to the mark – stop being so emotionally stunted and impotent.  All is takes is a gentle touch, an unexpected kiss, a lingering look.  It’s not rocket science.  Perhaps as a first reference you should trying reading something by Stephenie Meyer – like, Oh I don’t know – TWILIGHT, NEW MOON, ECLIPSE AND BREAKING DAWN.  And to complete your training to be a real man – try getting into Edward’s head by reading Stephenie’s draft of Midnight sun – available to read on her website at www.stepheniemeyer.com.

Yes – it is a romance novel – well done for pointing that out.   Any other romance novel reviews coming up or is it just Twiligth you’ve got the knife out for? Perhaps you would like to volunteer some reading material for us suggestions for us “women who think like 13 year old girls”?  Yes it’s a guilty pleasure – so what. Wind your neck in and join your own dating agency.

Oh and if you are a man, and enjoy Twilight – Mr. Inman suggests you are undoubtedly gay.

And here endeth the rant.

Remember Me Saturday

Kristen Stewart hangs with Robert Pattinson and his family

Kristen, Robert and his family

Twilight beauty Kristen Stewart hung out with Robert Pattinson and his family at a Remember Me afterparty at New York City’s Plaza Hotel earlier this week.

While R-Pattz nursed a beer as he worked the room like a seasoned show biz vet, Stewart sat and chatted with Robert’s mom Clare and sisters Elizabeth and Victoria at the Monday affair.

Stewart sported her casual look as usual, wearing a black shirt and jeans, while the scruffy Pattinson looked great in his suit.

Remember Me also stars Pierce Brosnan and Emilie de Ravin, and hits theaters March 12.

Pattinson: I’m not one for comforts

Thursday, 4 March 2010

Robert Pattinson insists that despite his A-list status he isn’t fussy about having material comforts.

The Twilight heartthrob said there is “very little” he can’t live without.

“I’m not one for comforts and stuff, I think I can kind of do without most things,” he said.

R-Patz also revealed he hasn’t really been splashing the cash since finding fame as vampire Edward Cullen.

He said: “I bought a really nice guitar recently, which is the only thing I’ve ever really spent a lot of money on. But that’s the only thing.

“I had my apartment in London before when I was unemployed – this tiny little place and I liked it more. You had to walk through a restaurant kitchen and up this staircase filled with trash and there’s no heating. I like that.

“But now it’s quite difficult. I can’t live in places like that any more. The people outside, that’s the only issue.”

Rob tames the locks – love it or hate it??

When Robert Pattinson hit the red carpet at the BAFTAs on Sunday evening in a custom made Gucci tuxedo, gone were his famously sexy tousled locks. Instead, his usually unruly head of hair was smoothed out into a more award show-ready look. It could have been due to the London rain, but what if Rob is planning to give up his famous bed head for a more tamed look?

What do you think? Personally I don’t really care what his hair looks like but if I really had to choose, tousled PLEASE!

mmm definitely the look on the LEFT........

mmm... definitely the look on the left.....
